Question: Does gender influence your  exercise of leadership?

Male Leader: "I never thought about it."  "My senior reports are all male; I guess it is what it is."

Female Leader: "My male colleagues get instant credibility by their title and position.  I always have to prove myself first."

Question: Does race and ethnicity influence your exercise of leadership?

Diverse Leader of Color:

"I have to work twice as hard to get half as far."

Female leader of color:

"White male leaders just need to do ordinary things to become leaders.  We have to do extraordinary things to get to where we are."

Women and Leadership in a Changing World
“If leadership is co-created in vivo with the group, and if it is to meet the needs of a changing world, it must be interactive, dynamic, and contextual. Leader and group identities need to be aligned.  An understanding of group dynamics and the psychology of differences must inform the exercise of leadership. To strive toward more inclusive models of leadership:

• Use a collaborative process to draw on the relational aspects of women and collective characteristics of non-Western   cultures.

• Weigh how historical and contemporary contexts influence what followers expect of their leaders. People now want a leader who can make them feel safe given the rise in violence and terrorism. During economic downturns, people want a leader who will guarantee prosperity or identify a suitable enemy (i.e., scapegoat).
• Align leader and group identity toward intersectionality and difference. During times of crisis, people feel insecure and want a leader who will build their identity and self-worth. The ideal leader will value differences and avoid catering to majority at the expense of the few, that is, marginalizing groups, creating out-groups, or dehumanizing those who are different.
• Empower all members to ensure that all voices are heard and the needs of all groups are addressed.

• Transformational leaders will have a vision for change, promote social justice goals, and subscribe to ethical principles and integrity in their conduct of leadership."
